Students should have a basic level of theory knowledge before enrolling in composition lessons.

While I may suggest textbooks or listening/score study assignments from time to time, the only materials required are a pencil, eraser, and manuscript paper.

My composition teaching philosophy combines the encouragement of creativity with a respect for craft and skill. I cannot teach someone how to be a composer, but I can provide the tools necessary to harness creative impulses in the most efficient way possible. I allow my students the freedom to compose the music they want to hear, as I help guide and refine their decision making process.

My studio is open to any and all styles of music including all veins of classical, jazz, musical theatre, pop/rock, and more. I don't care what music is being written, as long as it's written well.

Skills one can expect to develop while working with me include proper notation, penmanship, idea generation, development, counterpoint, orchestration, form, text-setting, idiomatic instrumental and vocal writing, basic piano and vocal skills, lyric writing, and more.

The bulk of a typical lesson would involve the student bringing in music or sketches completed outside of the lesson for review, a preview of the work silently then at the piano, and finally, my comments and suggestions on future directions for the work. We may also branch off into comparative score study, writing exercises, and other related topics as the lesson progresses.

I also teach lessons in Music Theory and Aural Skills, plus other more advanced topics.

MISSION STATEMENT:

My students come from a variety of backgrounds: beginner and advanced, young and old, amateur and professional. They enroll in order to improve their grades, to test out of upcoming classes, to enhance their musical performances and studies through increased musical literacy, to exercise their creativity, and to enrich their lives.

What they all have in common are a love for music and the recognition that actively engaging with music is an important part of who they want to be. It is my desire as a music educator to give my students the tools and inspiration they need to succeed in making music a rewarding and lasting part of their lives.
